The Monitor tracks selected indicators of the criminal justice system. In this issue the Monitor looks at, among other things, changing police numbers, case processing trends in the courts, changing prisoner numbers and growth trends in the private security industry.
Available statistics show that although Johannesburg still experiences the most crime, levels have dropped since 1994. Crime in Pretoria has increased, and the same applies for Durban and Cape Town.
Interpol data and South African crime statistics show that South Africas high level of violent crime sets the country apart from other crime ridden societies.
The internet has helped lower the transaction costs of fraudsters, increased their anonymity and widened the pool of potential victims on which they may pray.
Of the three criminal justice departments it is the department of justice and constitutional development which gains the most from the 2001/2002 budget. Substantial increases are given to the national prosecuting authority and the Scorpions
