The book analyses, in some detail, both indigenous and external efforts to develop African countries' individual and collective capacities to undertake peacekeeping operations with chapters on:
the prospects for peace and security in Africa; the evolving role of 'peacekeeping the Organisation of African Unity; the Economic Community of West African States; the Southern African Development Community; other African subregional organisations; ad hoc initiatives; the history of peacekeeping (two chapters); four chapters on efforts to develop African capacity (on the United States, France, the United Kingdom and other bilateral initiatives); multilateral initiatives and a conclusion. In the preface to the book, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan notes that "The authors ... have carried out an exhaustive review that draws on an array of expertise from throughout the UN Secretariat and UN system as well as from dozens of UN Member States." 541 pages.
